How To Register Your Decision To Be A Donor
Every Australian has the opportunity to register their decision to donate organs and tissues for transplantation on the Australian Organ Donor Register (AODR). Queenslanders can no longer record their intent to donate on their drivers licence. Therefore it is very important that you register your decision to donate (or not donate) on AODR.
Registration brochures are available through every Medicare office or by telephoning the toll free number 1800 777 203.
You can visit the website to download at registration form from the Australian Organ Donor Register.
As from 1 July 2005 the registration of your consent on the AODR became legal.
Once you have registered it is very important that you tell your family, partner, and close friends about your decision to donate. They will be central to the donation process and therefore should be made aware of your decision.
Your family member, partner or close friends will be asked about your decision to be an organ and/or tissue donor to confirm that you had not changed your mind since you recorded your decision on AODR. The more family members who know of your decision to donate organs and/or tissue for transplantation, the more likely it is that it will occur.
By telling your family, partner and friends of your wishes it means all they have to do is honour your decision and not make it for you. It makes it easier for them.
Where a potential donor has made their decision clear, experience shows, that their family, partner and close friends will be more comfortable at the time donation is actively considered.
