Laser practices

This page provides advice on how to apply for licences to possess and use laser apparatus (ie. Class 4 laser equipment) for dental practices.

Use licence application kit

Any person who uses laser apparatus must hold an appropriate use licence. To apply for a licence, the following steps should be followed:

Refer to the relevant information sheet for details on the licensing criteria applicable to the practice proposed to be undertaken. If the practice you wish to undertake is not included, please contact Radiation Health for advice.

Submit the completed application form, with verification of qualifications and experience as requested by the applicable licensing criteria information sheet, to Radiation Health. The prescribed fee must accompany the application.

Possession licence application kit

Any person who possesses laser apparatus must hold an appropriate possession licence, issued under the Radiation Safety Act 1999. To apply for a licence, the following steps should be followed:

Develop a radiation safety and protection plan which details the radiation protection measures that will be conducted by your practice. Information to assist in the development of such a plan is available, as follows:

Submit the completed application form, with a signed and dated radiation safety and protection plan, to Radiation Health. The prescribed fee must accompany the application.
