Pre-Admission

Pre-Admission (PREAC) assessment is essential for elective surgical patients to:

• Obtain accurate information the patient and identify any potential risks
• Decrease patient cancellations
• Inform patients of their surgery
• Decrease late preparation for elective surgery.

Patients attend PREAC approximately 1-6 weeks prior to their surgery. Pre-Admission Assessment with PREAC is valid for six months.

All bookings for surgical admission are review by the surgical case manager.

Out of Town patients are contacted by phone and either:

• Sent an appointment the day before their surgery or
• Undergo a phone interview.

If patients have not attended PREAC they will require admission by the resident on the morning of surgery in the Surgical Day Care Unit (SDCU).

A new Integrated Pre-Admission assessment form which has a multidisciplinary focus is now in use.

Admission

The majority of elctive surgery patients are admitted on the day of the surgery, except where clinically inappropriate. Patients present at approximately 6:30am for morning operating lists and approximately 10:30am for afternoon operating lists. Patients admitted the day before surgery are requested to arrive at 1:00pm.

Surgical Day Care Unit

Once admitted on the morning of surgery, patients are directed to the Surgical Day Care Unit (SDCU), to prepare for theatre. Patients having day surgery also return home via the surgical day care unit.

It is important that day case patients have a responsible adult to accompany them home and stay with them for a 24 hour period. If this has not been arranged surgery may have to be cancelled.
