Neonatal Nurses

Whether you are an experienced and well qualified neonatal nurse, a new graduate seeking to develop a career in neonatal nursing, or an experienced Registered Neonatal Nurse seeking new experiences, our neonatal unit welcomes you. Full time, part time and casual positions are available. A well supported transition to neonatal nursing program is provided for new inexperienced staff. Experienced neonatal nurses have exciting opportunities for career development in one of the largest neonatal units in the southern hemisphere. We cater for all neonatal medical and surgical conditions, except babies requiring open heart surgery. The Grantley Stable Neonatal Unit has a commitment to the promotion of professional development. The Department of Neonatology runs a number of programs aimed at improving the standard if neonatal care, as well as supporting staff in the pursuit of nursing leadership and excellence. These are freely available to staff working at RBWH. There are also selected programs available to health professionals from other hospitals.

Orientation

All staff are comprehensively supported in their transition to the neonatal unit. There is an extensive orientation program that is tailored to the level of expertise of the practitioner.

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

The NRP is the accredited American Academy of Paediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation Program. It is also endorsed by the Royal College of Nursing, Australia. It commenced in 2001 and is now run throughout Queensland, with support from the Grantley Stable Neonatal Unit. The program involves a full day of lectures and clinical scenarios and is available to all health care professionals working within RBWH and other health care institutions. This is preceded by pre reading which is forwarded to staff well ahead of the program. The NRP is attended by all new staff (medical and nursing) as a component of their orientation to the neonatal unit. Recertification in the form of a half day program, with associated pre reading, is available to staff who have attended a full NRP within the previous 2 years.

CPAP Workshops

The GSNU offers 3 CPAP workshops a year to experienced staff. The workshop involves a learning package to be completed before the day that enables staff to update their knowledge of the theory surrounding CPAP. The workshop provides lectures delivered by GSNU Medical and Nursing staff about the complications and care of babies on CPAP. The afternoon is based around a number of key skills stations that allow participants to get hands on experience fitting a variety of CPAP interfaces, trouble shooting and positioning babies on CPAP. Attendance fees apply. Please contact the Neonatal Nurse Educators for application forms and /or further information.

Transition to Neonatal Nursing

All new staff that do not hold a neonatal intensive care nursing certificate are required to complete the transition to neonatal nursing program. This comprehensive program is self directed, and is designed to prepare the inexperienced nurse who wishes to build a career in neonatal nursing, with the necessary skills and abilities to function in the neonatal unit. The transition to neonatal nursing program is accredited with participating Queensland Universities, and earns credit points towards post graduate qualifications. Transition is designed to be completed within two years. The self directed nature of the program is supported by formalised study days, which are conducted across the Central Area Health Service of Queensland Health. In addition to preparing new inexperienced staff to function in the neonatal unit, the program's modules are able to be selected individually by experienced neonatal nurses who already hold a neonatal qualification, but would like to update in a specific area of care. Transition students are preceptored in the clinical area by experienced clinical preceptors. The aim of the transition program is to support new practitioners to achieve competence in the neonatal area. The program has been instrumental in retaining staff in the neonatal unit.

Inservice Program

Daily In-service is conducted in the neonatal unit. On coming evening staff are provided with the opportunity to attend in-service from 2.15pm to 2.45pm daily. A wide range of topics is covered with staff having input into content and presentations.

Annual Seminar

The Grantley Stable Neonatal Unit hosts an annual neonatal seminar. Held each February, the seminar attracts a range of health professionals involved in newborn care from throughout Queensland, and other Australian States of Australia. The seminar is open to all and is a much anticipated event on the neonatal education calendar.
