Cancer Care Services

The Cancer Care Services provides inpatient and outpatient services to patients from throughout Queensland, Northern New South Wales (NSW), Northern Territory and neighbouring South / West Pacific countries. The Division conducts outreach clinics at other metropolitan hospitals and hospitals within the Central Area Health Service. The Service utilises all current treatment modalities in medical and radiation oncology practice as well as haematology and bone marrow transplantation.

Inpatient Ward 5C has specialised Bone Marrow Transplant beds, general Haematology beds and facilities for radiation isotope therapy and brachytherapy. It is the only public facility in Queensland for inpatients requiring unsealed isotope therapy.

Inpatient Ward 6AS supplies services to medical and radiation oncology inpatients.

Bone Marrow Transplant Unit

This is one of the largest adult / paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Units in Australia and offers all treatment modalities for adult bone marrow transplantation. There is a large bone marrow and cellular therapies laboratory. The case mix also includes general haematological conditions and haematology / oncology. Bone marrow techniques utilised include autologous, allogeneic and matched unrelated transplantation with allogeneic transplants forming the majority. In addition, stem cell procedures are also common practice.

Day Therapy Unit

This provides services to enable patients to remain in the community whilst receiving treatment. Treatment of various complexities is offered to patients requiring chemotherapy, transfusions and apheresis services.

Cancer Care Booking Centre

The Cancer Care Booking Centre is responsible for all outpatient departments: Haematology Bone Marrow Transplant, Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology. This is partly in recognition of the increased utilisation of synchronous chemotherapy and radiation therapy for a variety of solid tumours and the interaction of the different departments within the Division. This area provides services for initial consultation and treatment follow-up. During normal business hours this area also acts as an Admission Centre for patients requiring urgent assessment and possible admission and investigation.

The radiation treatment floor is now situated on Level 3, Joyce Tweddell Building and has amalgamated all the treatment and planning functions, which were formerly in separate areas.

Queensland Haemophilia Centre

The Queensland Haemophilia Centre works closely with a similar centre at the Royal Children’s Hospital centre providing comprehensive care for those with inherited bleeding disorders in Queensland and Northern NSW. Care includes medical, nursing, counselling, and physiotherapy / orthopaedic care. Outreach clinics are conducted at Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Nambour, Cairns and Townsville. The Haemophilia Nurse Consultant in the Cancer Care Day Therapy Unit coordinates day care.
