The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) is one of the largest in Australia. Experienced emergency physicians and nursing staff, training registrars and house officers offer a 24-hour comprehensive emergency and trauma services.
The Emergency Department is responsible for the reception, triage, initial management and referral or admission of all non-elective patients presenting to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. The department also operates a 24-hour 16-bed observation unit facility.
Special interests include:
The Unit provides limited ambulatory care to non-urgent patients. Patients are referred to General Practitioners or relevant specialists as necessary. All patients are encouraged to establish links with a practitioner in the community.
The Primary Care Unit can assist in the triage and work up of ambulatory patients thought to require referral to Specialist Outpatients or Allied Health Clinics or to review patients with complex hospital histories. Although staffed by experienced, vocationally registered General Practitioners, the Primary Care Unit is not a general practice and continuing care and family practice are not available.
Special interests include the Multidisciplinary Lymphoedema Clinic, physiotherapy department and multidisciplinary chronic wound assessment clinic.
Phoning the Admissions desk to organise an appointment to the Primary Care Unit is preferred.
