Mental Health Services

The RBWH Mental Health is one of the larger acute mental health services in Queensland. It is a statewide leader in clinical care, service models, teaching and research. The Service has direct links with the Discipline of Psychiatry University of Queensland.

Inner North Brisbane Mental Health Service (INBMHS)

Provides assessment and treatment services to people with mental disorders and serious mental health problems, across both in-patient and community settings. The service is provided for people who reside in the RBWH Mental Health Catchment Area. (Suburb List ).

The Inner North Brisbane Mental Health Service incorporates the following services:

Acute Care Team

The Acute Care Team provides assessment and acute treatment services. They are responsible for the acute assessment area (Psychiatric Emergency Centre) based in the Emergency Department, the Community Assessment Service and the Mobile After Hours Service.

Community Mental Health Teams

The Northern and Southern community teams provide case management services for the District and are affiliated with I Floor and G Floor inpatient mental health units.

Homeless Health Outreach Team

The Homeless Health Outreach Team (HHOT) provides health responses in the area of mental health, general health, alcohol and substance misuses for homeless people living within a 3 km radius of the GPO.

Somerset Villas

Somerset Villas is a 20 bed residential rehabilitation unit on the ‘Rosemount’ Campus for people with chronic mental disorders who cannot live unsupported in the community or who require extended support and rehabilitation before returning to independent living.

Resource Team

With the overarching objective of supporting clinical service delivery for the INBMHS, the Resource Team provides in-depth information and education and collaborates with mental health staff and their clients in key areas including accommodation, vocational rehabilitation, psycho-education, community partnerships and consumer and carer services. The team co-ordinates a range of therapeutic programmes including Healthy Lifestyles, Dual Diagnosis and Family Education, and provides specialist clinical input in dual diagnosis, forensic mental health, indigenous and multicultural mental health and nutrition and dietetics.

Adolescent Psychiatry

The Adolescent Unit provides assessment and treatment services to adolescents living in the Central and Northern Health Area Health Services.

Alcohol and Drug Service

This service consists of an assessment and referral team, an in-patient detoxification unit and a consultation liaison service for the hospital, a statewide clinical advisory service and a research team.

The detoxification unit (HADS) provides treatment to individuals who are likely to experience a moderate to severe withdrawal syndrome when ceasing use of alcohol or other drugs of dependence.

Older Persons Mental Health Service

The Older Persons Mental Health Service provides hospital and community mental health services to people aged 65 years and over residing in the RBWH HSD catchment area. The service incorporates:

Eating Disorders Service

This service consists of Eating Disorder Outreach Services (EDOS) and in-patient beds. The outreach service provides consultation and support services for other mental health services to assist them in managing their own patients locally. The in-patient beds are available for the assessment and treatment of first admission eating disorder patients from all districts.

GP Psych Opinion

This is a consultation service for GPs who wish to manage their own patients with mental illness. The aim is to offer timely access to specialist consultation advice on issues such as clarification of diagnosis / review of management plan.  All patients are seen in Private Practice Specialist Suite and are bulk billed.

This service is not suitable for those patients who will require ongoing mental health follow-up, as assessments are usually carried out over 1-2 sessions.

Community Forensic Mental Health Service

The Community Forensic Mental Health Service aims to provide timely and responsive forensic mental health services to meet the needs of mentally ill persons who have, or are at risk of involvement with the Criminal Justice System (CJS). It does this through programs such as the Community Forensic Outreach Service (CFOS), The Court Liaison Service (CLS), and The Prison Mental Health Service (PMHS).

Community Forensic Outreach Service

CFOS is a consultation liaison service that assists mental health services, across both the Central and Southern Health Service Areas, to enhance their capacity to provide effective and safe community management of patients with forensic issues. Patients referred to CFOS must be existing District Mental Health Service patients. CFOS clinicians provide a range of specialist risk assessment, advice and training as well as playing a key role with the District Forensic Liaison Network.

Court Liaison Service

The Court Liaison Service provides mental health screening and diversion for people appearing before the magistrates' court or detained in the local watch-house. The purpose of this service is the early identification of people with a mental illness to ensure that appropriate mental health treatment, advice or referral is made. The court liaison clinician also provides advice, support and training to court and watch house staff on mental health issues and the Mental Health Act 2000. Consultation Liaison Psychiatry

The Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Service provides clinical liaison services for the assessment and management of mental health issues and disorders to patients of the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, both inpatients and outpatients.

The service is organised into teams, around one of the Consultant Psychiatrists. A team is allocated to each clinical department / unit of the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

Inpatient referrals will be first directed to a contact / intake staff member for that team, who will usually do the initial assessment. 

Outpatient referrals will be seen by either the Consultant or Registrar, with the exception of Maternity Outpatients where all referrals are directed to the CNC for Maternity and Newborn's.
