We specialise in general neurology disorders. Our Neurology department has the only Huntington’s Disease and Friedreich’s Ataxia services in Queensland.
We also care for and treat people with general and rare nervous system conditions including:
- epilepsy
- motor neurone disease
- stroke
- movement disorders.

- specialised outpatient clinics and services
- neurophysiology service to test and diagnose a range of nervous system conditions.
How to access this service
To access this service, your GP or medical practitioner will need to send a referral letter to the hospital.
If there is a waiting list, you will receive a confirmation letter and be advised on what to do next. If there is no waiting list, you will receive an appointment booking letter or we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for your appointment.

What to bring
- Your Medicare card
- Private health insurance card (if you have one)
- Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
- Current medications (prescription, over the counter and herbal medicine)
- Relevant x-rays, scans or any other test results or reports
- Glasses, hearing and mobility aids
- Your appointment letter
- Any special items listed on your letter
- WorkCover claim number (if relevant)
- Snacks, a drink or money to buy refreshments
- Something to read or do while you wait
- An adult carer to support you and take you home
- Copy of Advanced Healthcare Directive or Enduring Power of Attorney (if you have one)
- A jacket or cardigan in case you get cold
- A dressing gown or cardigan, sleepwear or comfortable day clothes
- Slippers and shoes (low heel, closed-in, non-slip, adjustable and firm fitting around the foot)
- Your toiletries and personal items
- Copy of Advanced Healthcare Directive or Enduring Power of Attorney if you have one
- Something to read or do during your stay
- A smart phone, tablet or laptop, connecting earphones and chargers so you can connect to the free MetroNorth-PatientWiFi and access entertainment. Televisions may not be available for use.
- Medical devices required for your care (e.g. CPAP machine)
- Do not bring large amounts of cash or valuables such as jewellery, watches or other items of value to you

Health professionals
Our Neurology Department provides tertiary and complex care. We have several general neurological services, subspecialty and statewide services and outpatient clinics. Specialised services include:
- Stroke services including access to thrombolysis and endovascular clot retrieval and a stroke unit with 10 beds and multidisciplinary nursing and allied health team.
- Motor Neurone Disease service with collaborations with The Prince Charles Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital.
- Movement Disorders Team offers management with pump therapies for Parkinsons Disease and botulinum toxin for dystonia.
- Multiple Sclerosis Team offers the full range of therapies including infusions, in conjunction with the Internal Medicine Day Therapy Unit.
- Metro North Comprehensive Epilepsy Surgical Program manages patients with refractory epilepsy and assesses patients for neurosurgery with 3 video EEG-monitoring beds.
- Clinical measurements team with EEG, EMG, NCS services for inpatients and outpatients and autonomic neurophysiology.
- After-hours consultation service for hospitals needing urgent advice to guide the next few hours of management. Please note, this is a once-off phone service and specialists are not able to provide ongoing advice and follow up.

Huntington’s Disease Clinic
We offer access to a multidisciplinary care team that includes psychiatrist, neuropsychologist, speech pathologist and a welfare manager from Huntington’s Queensland supporting patients and their families.
Friedreich’s Ataxia Clinic
We have the second dedicated clinic of its kind in Australia that offers specialised comprehensive evaluation and management of patients. The clinic provides a range of services including access to a neurologist, cardiologist, audiologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, speech pathologist, dietitian, echocardiographer and referrals to related specialist services such as genetic health and rehabilitation.
