Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology offers a comprehensive ophthalmic service including emergency, general and sub-specialty eye care for inpatients and outpatients.

Close relations are maintained with other specialities at the hospital, especially endocrinology (diabetes, thyroid eye disease), plastic surgery, burns and maxillofacial surgery (trauma, oncology), neurosurgery and neurology (neuro-ophthalmology, trauma, cranio-orbital tumours) as well as oncology.

There is an association with the University of Queensland School of Medicine, providing teaching and assessment of medical students as well as additional elective terms for interested students. Overseas-trained doctors have also been assessed for competency in this department.  Consultants of this department are also Fellows of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and are actively involved in research and teaching.

Eye Emergency Department
Telephone: All emergency cases must be discussed with the Ophthalmology Registrar. Contact through RBWH Switch (07) 36368111 to obtain appropriate prioritization and treatment. Urgent cases accepted via phone must be accompanied with a written referral and a copy faxed immediately to the Eye Clinic.
