All elective surgery patients will attend a Pre-Admission clinic prior to their surgery. They either attend the central Pre-Admission Services located within Specialist Outpatient Services Department, or a decentralised clinic depending on the specialty.
The Surgical Day Care Unit (SDCU) is an inpatient facility that provides a day admission service to patients with a wide range of surgical, medical and diagnostic needs.
The majority of patients booked for elective surgery are admitted on the day of surgery. SDCU is the admission point for most patients booked for surgery or other procedures on the day of admission.
Patients attend PRE-AC approximately 1 - 6 weeks prior to their surgery. Registration with PRE-AC is valid for six months.
Patients admitted for routine surgery at the RBWH will be sent a four page Pre-Admission Assessment Form to complete. The patient needs to complete the grey areas on the form. Patients are encouraged to attend their GP if they have any problems completing these sections. The hospital staff completes the rest of the form at their Preac appointment.
