Renal Medicine is a vital and expanding department that delivers renal services for the Brisbane North area to lower end of the Sunshine Coast. The department also supports the renal needs of patients from throughout the state.
Facilities and Services
Renal medicine provides all of a patient's renal services with the exception of peri-transplant care. This includes outpatient and inpatient care for all modes of dialysis for children and adults.
The service is primarily located at the RBWH however services are provided at the Redcliffe Hospital, Caboolture Hospital and the North West Community Centre. Outreach services are delivered in the homes of patients who are dialysing independently.
There is also a strong emphasis on learning and the service provides vocational training for medical and nursing staff.
Special Interests
The service has special interests in the management of chronic kidney disease and lupus nephritis, the delivery of independent dialysis and the conduct of clinical trials and research into the mechanisms of chronic kidney disease.
Specialist areas include supporting the vascular service throughout central Queensland, specialty cardiothoracic services at The Prince Charles Hospital and the emerging haemodialysis service at the Royal Children's Hospital. Haemodialysis services are also delivered at Redcliffe Hospital.
