The Trauma Service at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) works with specialty services to coordinate and improve the management of trauma patients.
The service liaises closely with the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Surgical and Medical inpatient units, and Allied Health departments to ensure care of trauma patients is streamlined from initial assessment and resuscitation through to rehabilitation.
The Trauma Service was established in February 2008 as recommended by the Queensland Statewide Trauma Plan. The RBWH admits approximately 2500 trauma patients annually and is designated as a major trauma centre.
The service is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of medical and nursing staff from a range of specialties including surgery, radiology, rehabilitation medicine, emergency medicine and orthopaedics.
In addition to patient care, the Trauma Service has other responsibilities including the development of clinical guidelines, research, education within the hospital and the region, injury prevention programs, and disaster management.
