Arriving on time for your appointment

We recommend that you arrive no more than 15 minutes before your allocated appointment time.

Please note that arriving early doea not guarantee an appointment earlier than your scheduled time.

Waiting for your appointment

While the RCH makes every effort to ensure you are seen at your allocated time, unavoidable delays occur because:

• busy clinics may run over time
• teaching occurs continuously.

Since the RCH is a major teaching hospital, children attending public specialist outpatient appointments may be seen by registrars and medical students in conjunction with a consultant.

We recommend that you do not make any other appointments outside the hospital on your clinic day and if you have an afternoon appointment, make arrangements to have any other children collected from school or day care.

Important items to bring

• your appointment card and Medicare card
• any relevant medical information that the doctor may require, e.g. x-rays, blood results, referral letters, immunisation records, baby's personal health record (baby health book), and previous medical records (if applicable)
• any baby items, such as nappies and formula
• snacks and drinks for the children
• something to amuse the children, e.g. toys, reading/colouring-in books, etc. because of the likelihood that considerable waiting will occur
• something for yourself, such as a book, magazine.

Cost

Public specialist outpatient services are free to people who:

• hold an Australian Medicare Card, or
• are subject to reciprocal medical arrangements.

You will be required to pay for public specialist outpatient services prior to the consultation if you:

• are not entitled to an Australian Medicare Card and
• are not subject to any reciprocal medical arrangements.

Important reasons to telephone

Telephone the Outpatients Department on 07 3636 7818 if:

• your child is generally unwell or has an infectious disease, such as Chicken Pox or Measles - your appointment may need to be cancelled and rescheduled. Please ring the above number if you have any concerns and ask to speak with the clinic nurse
• your contact details change
• you are unable to attend an appointment
• you need to cancel or make a new appointment.

Please be aware that if you cancel your child's appointment you may have to wait some time before a new appointment is available due to the number of children requiring treatment.

If you are visiting more than one department within the hospital, please ensure you notify each department of changes to your details. Information is not shared across departments.
