Overnight in the ward
One parent or carer may stay overnight with their child in the ward. All parents who stay overnight must register as an authorised visitor. Please discuss arrangements with ward staff on admission.
Parents or carers may sleep:
- on a folding bed next to their child's hospital bed. These beds are available from ward staff after 7pm and must be packed up and returned by 7am
- on a reclining chair next to their child's bed
- in the parent lounge located near each ward.
Please note that for safety reasons, parents are not permitted to sleep in their child's bed or cot with them.
Accommodation near the hospital
For parents and other immediate family members who require accommodation for extended periods of time, there are several accommodation options close to the hospital.
Parents from outside Brisbane should speak with the welfare officer on 07 3636 7397 before their child's admission to discuss if and how they might access any of these special accommodation options.
- Leonard Lodge is managed by the Cressbrook Committee (formerly the Women's Auxillary of the Royal Children's Hospital), and provides inexpensive accommodation in 38 units. This accommodatioin is for Queensland country families who have children in the RCH. Leonard Lodge is within close walking distance of the hospital, off Bramston Terrace, just behind the hospital.
- Ronald McDonald House is located at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, within close proximity of the RCH. It provides a 'home-away-from-home' for the families of seriously ill children who are undergoing treatment at the RCH and other nearby facilities. Accommodation at Ronald McDonald House allows families to stay together in a homelike environment at a fraction of the cost of a motel room, for as long as they need to, thereby helping to preserve the family unit in the midst of physical, emotional and economic adversity. Ronald McDonald House can comfortably accommodate up to 51 families. Six rooms at Ronald McDonald House are fully self-contained, making them ideal for outpatients requiring semi-isolated facilities.
- Mincom Village is run by the Leukaemia Foundation and is located close to the RCH. Mincom Village has 14 fully self-contained comfortable, spacious air-conditioned one and two bedroom units for families whose child is undergoing treatment at the RCH. The centre has undercover parking for residents, a children's playground and community rooms with tea/coffee making facilities, TV, books, magazines, board games and children's toys.
