Location
The Public Specialist Outpatient Service is located on Level 1, Surgical Building.

Enter the hospital from the carpark or through the front foyer to find volunteers at the Information Desks who will help you find the Public Specialist Outpatients Department

Please note that Burns, Oncology and some Rehabilitation clinics do not take place in the Public Specialist Outpatient Services Department.

At this time we are unable to provide Cardiology and Allergy/Immunology via the Public Specialists Outpatients Service. If you require these services, please contact the Private Specialist Outpatient Service.

How do I get an appointment?

 

 

Supporting notes

Step 1

Gain a referral from a medical officer such as a General Practitioner.

The referral should include:

  • Child’s name and date of birth and residential address
  • Both parents full names, residential address, and all phone numbers, such as home, mobile and business numbers (if a parent’s name is different from the child’s name please include your full names)
  • Reason for referral and summary of child’s medical condition
  • Treatments and/or investigations previously carried out on your child
  • Summary of results as appropriate

Post or fax your referral to:

Step 3

When the RCH Outpatients department receives your referral, it will be assessed and given an urgency ranking for an appointment.

 

Step 4

The RCH Outpatients Department will
Telephone you regarding the appointment;
Send you an appointment in the mail; or
Address the referral concern in a letter to the doctor that referred you.

If you have not heard anything about your child’s appointment within 3 weeks of sending a referral, contact the Outpatient Service on 07 3636 7818.

A full medical history will be taken at the appointment including immunization details. Please have this information at hand.

Things you should know about your appointment
Cost of Public Specialist Outpatient Services
Public specialist outpatient services are free to people who

If you

you will be required to pay for Public Specialist Outpatient Services prior to the consultation.

As at 18 October, 2006Public Specialist Outpatient Services consultations are $64.50 per consultation plus the cost of any investigations (eg. X-rays, blood tests) required as part of the consultation.

Please contact  the Public Specialist Outpatient Services Department if you are unsure about costs for Public specialist outpatient services.

Arriving on time for your appointment
The RCH recommends that you arrive no more than 15 minutes before your allocated appointment time.
Arriving early does not guarantee an appointment earlier than your scheduled time.

Waiting for your appointment
While the RCH makes every effort to have your appointment occur at the allocated time, unavoidable delays occur because

Since the Royal Children’s Hospital is a major teaching hospital, children attending Public Specialist Outpatient appointments may be seen by registrars and medical students in conjunction with a consultant.

We recommend

  1. That you do not make any other appointments outside the hospital on your clinic day
  2. If you have an afternoon appointment, make arrangements to collect any other children from school or day care.

Please be aware that if you cancel your child’s appointment, you may have to wait some time before a new appointment is available due to the number of children requiring appointments.

Even if you visit other departments (eg. Oral Health) you will need to also notify us of any change of contact details.

Food and beverages
People are welcome to bring their own food to the Royal Children’s Hospital however may wish to visit

which offer a wide range of contemporary café food and beverages.

Vending machines are located throughout the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Heating of Baby Bottles
Workplace, Health and Safety regulations prohibit the heating of baby bottles in microwaves.
Please check with staff on arrival in case you require assistance with the heating of baby bottle.

Children’s Play Areas
A children’s play area adjacent to the main reception desk is staffed by volunteers from the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. All children are welcome to play here when the volunteers are in attendance. However, parents should not to leave the immediate area for any length of time as this is not a child minding facility.

Food and drinks are not permitted in the play area.

A small activity area is located near the eye/orthopaedic reception but this is not staffed by volunteers.

Telephones
Mobile Telephones
To assist in the safe and efficient operation of the Department, parents are requested not to use mobile phones within the department.

Public Telephones
Public telephones are located in the main entrance to the hospital on Level 1 of the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation Building and on various floors within the hospital complex.

Free Telephones for Black & White and Yellow Cabs are located in the Royal Children’s Hospital main foyer.

Smoking Areas
Queensland Health facilities are smoke-free from 1 July 2006.

Smoking is not allowed at any Queensland Health facility.
 
If you wish to smoke, ask staff to direct you to an outdoor Nominated Smoking Place.

Travel and accommodation for families living outside the Brisbane Metropolitan area
Travel assistance
Parents who reside outside the Brisbane metropolitan area may be entitled to some form of travel assistance in attending appointments in the Public Specialist Outpatient Services Department. Parents should check with their local hospital regarding possible travel assistance. If you are given travel assistance present your form for signing by the doctor at the Royal Children’s Hospital at the time of consultation.

Accommodation
Originally the Women's Auxiliary of the Royal Children's Hospital, Cressbrook Committee, a community of volunteers since 1962, provides extra amenities for the hospital’s patients and staff and manages Leonard Lodge for the district.

Leonard Lodge’s 38 units provide inexpensive accommodation for the Queensland country families who have children in the Royal Children’s Hospital. Leonard Lodge supports the District to deliver services to families across the State.
 
Parents from outside Brisbane should speak with the Welfare Officer on 07 3636 7397 before their child’s admission to discuss if and how they might access special accommodation in Ronald McDonald House or Leonard Lodge.
