About the service

The Department's core business is:

• service provision
• teaching and
• research.

The Department of Emergency Medicine operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Department provides:

• initial assessment and management of all acute presentations to the Royal Children's Hospital and
• a telephone advice service for General Practitioners.

Patients are seen in order of urgency of their clinical condition (rather than in order of arrival) in accord with the Australasian Triage Scale.

Clinical care is significantly protocol driven. The Department embraces the concept of evidenced based clinical practice.

Teaching

As a tertiary service, the Department undertakes an active teaching role.

The Department

• Actively contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs
• Consultant staff are all Advanced Paediatric Life Support ( APLS ) instructors
• Established and now conducts the Paediatric Emergency Crisis Resource management Course PECRM at Queensland Health's Skills Development Centre
• Presents lectures and seminars to a range of external organisations including other hospitals, the Queensland Paramedic Training Program and the Family Care GP Locum Services.
• Has employed a new Nurse Educator who has establishing a Paediatric Emergency Nursing training module which will benefit nursing staff in Queensland's Emergency Departments

Research

The Department conducts research independently and in collaboration with other departments. It is a foundation member site of the Paediatric Research in Emergency Departments International Collaborative ( PREDICT ).
