Early Intervention Support Services
Minding Young Minds
The Minding Young Minds project aims to
- improve young people’s access to mental health services,
- increase community awareness of mental health related issues and
- provide relevant group programs to reduce the impact of mental health problems for young people.
Minding Young Minds works collaboratively with
- young people
- carers
- schools and
- other community groups.
Examples of programs under this initiative include:
Parents Kids and Drugs Program
Parents, Kids and Drugs is a free program for parents who have a child (under 25 years) who they know or suspect is using alcohol and drugs.
The program provides parents with
- alcohol and drug specific information
- parenting strategies
- communication and relationship skills and support.
It is held over five (5) weekly evening sessions each term at different locations in the RCH District, with free refreshments and catering provided.
Dual Diagnosis (Alcohol/Drugs + Mental Health)
Young people with combined mental health and drug and alcohol problems (commonly referred to as ‘dual diagnosis) are known to experience greater disadvantages and yet are less likely to receive timely effective treatment.
CYMHS has worked to
- amend assessment protocols
- deliver training
- develop resources
- undertake interagency collaboration and
- support consumer participation.
These actions have made significant advances in upskilling clinicians and other stakeholders in identifying and responding to the needs of young people (and their carers) affected via dual diagnosis.
