Ethics committee

Introduction

The RCH Human Research and Ethics Committee (HREC) ensures best practice clinical care for children and young adults, promotes research and is a major centre for both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in all aspects of paediatrics and child health.

The HREC's primary role is to consider, review, approve and monitor research conducted within Children's Health Services and counsel on all matters relating to bioethics.

Each year the committee considers between 100-200 new proposals.

The committee meets every six weeks to discuss and review proposals. It can also consider and approve submissions out of session.

The committee operates in accordance with the National Health and Medical Research Council’s “National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans (2007)” and is governed by a terms of reference.

The committee represents the ethos and principles of society more generally - in this case the broader Queensland community. The HREC acts as a resource available for staff and is available for consultation by any member of the public whose children use the hospital and its services.
