Nursing Career Development Framework: Continuous quality improvement activities

This covers:

• Performance Appraisal and Development (PAD)
• Practice audits and assessments 
• Mandatory competencies  

 

Performance Appraisal and Development (PAD)

Performance Appraisal identifies achievement and fulfilment of minimum expectations and requirements of all nursing staff.

The Development Plan component is related to optional additional development activities nominated to support career progression and development. It may be used to identify additional development activities necessary to meet role requirement and expectations.

Practice audits and assessments

Practice audits and assessments are conducted in clinical areas of the hospital each year. The process provides:

• the opportunity to review and evaluate the foundations of paediatric practice
• the capacity to recognise strengths and opportunities for improvement 
• a continuous process of improvement towards increased effectiveness in patient centred care.

Additional quality improvement activities are conducted by individuals and groups throughout the CHS.

Mandatory competencies

All nursing staff must meet mandatory credentialing requirements on induction and an an annual basis thereafter. These include:

• Paediatric Life Support Assessment
• Paediatric Medication Administration Assessment
• Fire and Safety
• Child Abuse and Neglect
• Cytotoxic Administration and Handling
• Manual Handling
• Paediatric Clinical Assessment - to be achieved as a one-time clinical competency assessment and as required as part of performance, appraisal and development plan.

Additional competencies may be required based on clinical specialty.
