The Rural Health Advisory Council, established in 1996, is a key advisory/consultative group to the Minister for Health. It advises on contemporary rural health issues and needs and rural health workforce matters. It provides recommendations on rural health policy and strategies to address the specific needs of people in rural areas. The Minister refers matters for the Council to consider and provide advice. A Medical Sub-Committee advises on medical matters referred by the Rural Health Advisory Council.
Members of RHAC are appointed by the Minister for Health for a four year period. Specific Ministerial appointments can be drawn from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, local government, the Queensland Country Women's Association and consumer groups. There are also delegates from a range of medical, nursing and allied health associations. Queensland Health representatives include the General Manager, Health Services, the Director, Strategy and Funding, District Managers and the Manager, Office for Rural Health.
