Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service
Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) is part of Queensland Health's network of 17 Hospital and Health Services.
SCHHS delivers public healthcare throughout the Sunshine Coast and Gympie region, including:
- Nambour General Hospital
- Caloundra Health Service
- Gympie Health Service
- Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital
- a range of community health services from 24 sites at Nambour, Maroochydore, Gympie, Noosaville, Caloundra, Kawana, Tewantin, Cooroy, Mountain Creek, Buderim, Beerwah, Tin Can Bay and Mooloolaba
- services provided to public patients at Noosa Private Hospital.
The new Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital at Kawana will open in December 2016 with about 450 beds, growing to 738 beds by 2021. This will increase the SCHHS bed base from approximately 660 in 2012 to about 1,012 beds when the public hospital is commissioned.
When the new public tertiary teaching hospital opens it will form part of the network of services provided by SCHHS, focussing on tertiary services for Sunshine Coast and Gympie residents, as well as people from outside the region, such as Wide Bay.
There is planned to be a single management structure covering it and the Nambour General Hospital, which will ensure that both facilities operate as a “one hospital two campus” model. This will see Nambour General Hospital become known as the Nambour campus of the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital.
The new public hospital will also provide non-tertiary care to local residents, including Caloundra. This means that some services currently provided at Caloundra Health Service and Nambour General Hospital will transfer to Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital.
Between late 2013 and mid-2018, SCHHS is contracting Ramsay Health Care’s new private hospital to assist in treating public patients while Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital is being built and commissioned.
More information about the public patient arrangement is available at the SCHHS website.
