Mental Health

The aim of the service is to promote, improve and maintain the mental health of people in the District. In partnership with individuals, their carers and the community the Southside Mental Health Service provides specialised services to children, adolescents, and adults who have experience of severe mental illness including psychosis (schizophrenia, bipolar mood disorder), depression, anxiety disorders, substance induced psychosis, obsessive compulsive disorder, and adjustment disorder and personality disorder.

Referrals can be made by individuals themselves, family members, friends, general practitioners, other service providers, or any other concerned person. All contact with the Southside Mental Health Service will be treated confidentially and with respect. Confidentiality does not apply in instances where health professionals must report to the Department of Child Safety any suspected child safety issues – as this reporting is law.

The service provides treatment that is holistic, taking into account biological, psychological and social aspects of the individual's problems and their care. Our team includes Mental Health Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Registrars, Consumer and Carer Liaison Representatives, and Speech Therapist.

The service provides 24 hour, seven day a week services in both the community and in hospital including:

  • Psychiatric assessment,
  • Ongoing treatment of people with serious mental disorders,
  • Support for families and carers,
  • Education about mental illness and rights and responsibilities,
  • Inpatient treatment in Redland Hospital and Logan Hospital,
  • Co-ordination of disability support and rehabilitation services, including liaison with other agencies,
  • Consultation services to patients on non-psychiatric wards of Redlands and Logan Hospital, and
  • Referral to other services.

The Southside Mental Health Service does not provide ongoing care to people whose main problems are drug and alcohol dependence, marital / relationship problems, or legal issues.

Interpreter services will be arranged if required.

The Mental Health Service also employs Indigenous Mental Health Workers, who are an integral part of the service.
