School Health Nurse

The Primary School Health Nurse Program is a service for children aged four to twelve years in Government, Catholic and Independent schools. School Health Nurses attend to health screenings for children based on the National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines.

Health Screen Of Children Includes:

  • A universal screening of distant vision for all Year One students and other year levels on request.
  • A universal hearing test of all Year One students and other year levels on request.
  • Developmental (Gross motor, Fine motor, Speech) and growth (height and weight) screening if required or requested.
  • Referring students and families to the most appropriate agency or health organisation if required.

Other Services Provided By School Health Nurses:

  • Participating in Health Promotion and Educational activities.
  • Providing health promotion resources to schools, students and their families.
  • Triple P (or Positive Parenting Program) Seminars or Groups.
    • Triple P is a program designed to assist families in parenting and aims in making parenting easier and more enjoyable.
  • Seasons for Growth.
    • This is a program to support children who have experienced grief and loss issues.
  • Hearing Assessment Service
  • A centre based hearing clinic that provides services to children aged four to eighteen years.

Referral Process:

  • School students may be referred to the School Health Nurse by parents and teachers with parental consent.
  • Children aged four to eighteen can be referred to the Hearing Assessment Service by parents.

Hearing Assessment Service:

Children aged four to eighteen can be referred to the Hearing Assessment Service by parents. This service is free of charge and a doctor’s referral is not required. Appointments can be made at the following centres:
