Toolkit Phase 1 - Investigate
To prevent falls and fall related injury in older people, you must first understand the problem by answering the following questions [10]:
This is referred to as a needs assessment.
As these questions are answered, it will become clear that falls are in most cases predictable and preventable. The assessment will also identify factors that can be addressed to reduce the number and severity of fall related injuries.
The combination of data and community information collected will help to:
-
provide a starting point or baseline on which to improve and work from, as well as monitor and evaluate change/progress
-
develop an overview of the local issue, which can be used in meetings with key stakeholders and the community
-
identify relevant, current services and activities and highlight unmet needs eg. gaps in services (often referred to as a stocktake or mapping)
-
develop knowledge to build credibility and respect when engaging key stakeholders and the community
-
build awareness among key stakeholders and the community
-
identify attitudes of key stakeholders and the community
-
develop of project/program priorities, goals and objectives.
