What do we know about the target group?

The target group is the people that your project/program will focus on for example: people aged 60 years and over. The target group for the Queensland Stay on Your Feet^® Wide Bay/Burnett trial project was people aged 60 years and over, and indigenous people aged 50 years and over. However, you may choose a segment of an age group for example: people aged 65 to 70 years.

It is important to remember people aged 50 or 60 years and over are not a homogenous group. Each decade of life brings significant life stages and changes. These factors need to be seriously considered when selecting interventions.

Information about the target group may need to be collected from existing research and through focus groups or surveys. This information will help to determine: 

• how to reach the target group, including those who will benefit most and those most in need [90].
• the type of language to use (key messages)
• the readiness of the target group to change their behaviour [26]
• barriers to behaviour change [26]
• the type of falls prevention or healthy active ageing activity they are likely to take part in.
