Sun safety at schools
Primary schools
Primary schools can implement sun protective practices by
- developing policies to actively implement prevention strategies
- creating shade in the school grounds
- avoiding the peak time of the day to go outside and follow recommendations in Sun safety for outdoor sports
- including sun safety as part of the school curriculum across all year levels
- involving teachers and parents as positive role models
- introducing a uniform or recommended clothing and hat that is sun safe
- encouraging the wearing of sunglasses and sunscreen.
The Cancer Council Queensland holds a sun protective awards program called the National SunSmart Schools Program. To become involved in this Program contact the Cancer Council Queensland Cancer Helpline on tollfree phone 13 11 20.
Education Queensland's website contains curriculum health issue information and guidelines for skin cancer and sun safety.
