Information for sporting organisations and officials

Sporting organisations and officials can greatly influence the amount of ultraviolet radiation that will affect players, coaches, officials, umpires, and spectators at matches and games. This in turn will affect the amount of exposure to the sun that may contribute to someone getting skin cancer. Sun safety for outdoor sports factsheet contains useful advice.

Sports organisations and officials need to consider time/s of day that sports are played and when training occurs; shade for players (if possible) and spectators; and protective clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen. These need to be included as protective equipment of the sport.

Sun safe guidelines for sporting organisations

A sporting organisation with a written and implemented sun safe policy shows a commitment to sun protection. It should provide sun protection for officials, players, and spectators during training, matches and games. The Cancer Council Queensland website contains policy information.
