Sun safety at play (sport and recreation)
Information for parents and carers
Parents and carers can actively advocate for sun protection at their sports organisation. It is important to protect yourself and your child/ren from overexposure to ultraviolet radiation, that causes skin cancer. Sun safety for outdoor sports factsheet contains useful advice.
You can help by supporting your sports organisation to:
- purchase, erect and maintain shade
- schedule training and game play to avoid the peak ultraviolet time of the day
- encourage clothing for uniforms that offers maximum sun protection
- include a sun protective hat into the uniform (if appropriate)
- encourage the wearing of sunglasses in off-field activity
- correctly use sunscreen.
You can also be a positive role model and be sun safe yourself.
Tips for being sun safe:
- Look for parks that offer shade, or take your own shade (like umbrella or tent) to the park/beach with you.
- Avoid going outside in peak UV times. Try to go out in the early morning, or late afternoon. Play indoors during peak UV times.
- Dress yourself and your child/ren in sun protective clothing before you go outside.
- Wear a sun safe hat, and ensure that your child/ren does too.
- Wear sunglasses and provide these for your child/ren also.
- Apply sunscreen before you go outside, and don’t forget to reapply at least every two hours.
