Questions to ask your General Practitioner
Patients could ask the following questions of their GP to better understand their situation where your GP suggests you should see a specialist. Patients are encouraged to ask as many questions as necessary concerning their condition in order to gain an understanding of the treatment options available.
- Why do I need to see a specialist?
- Why are you referring me to this particular specialist?
- How do I make an appointment with the specialist?
- How long will I have to wait to see this specialist?
- How long will I have to wait if I am required to be admitted?
- What should I do if my condition deteriorates?
- What should I do if my condition improves?
- Am I able to see this or another specialist at other public facilities?
- If the specialist you have referred me to has lengthy waiting time for admission, is there an alternative specialist you can recommend that may admit me sooner?
- Does this specialist consult both private and public patients?
- If I have private health insurance and/or am willing to pay, will this or another specialist see me sooner?
- How do I find out how much it will cost to see a specialist privately?
