Why are these groups at greater risk?
- People with existing medical conditions may have weaker body defences (immune systems) which makes it harder for them to fight new illness and easier for bacteria to invade cells causing conditions such as pneumonia. Flu can also make existing illnesses worse.
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders are more likely to have existing medical conditions that make them susceptible to serious illness from Human Swine Influenza.
- Pregnant women are at increased risk of complications (including pneumonia and early labour) from any type of flu.
- These people should seek early medical advice if they develop flu-like symptoms.
- People who fall into the identified vulnerable groups should follow the advice on how to protect themselves be mindful of flu-like symptoms and consider avoiding mass gatherings.
- If you have concerns or need further information speak to your local doctor or contact 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84).
