REHABILITATION IS THE AIM
Basic Principles of Psychiatric Rehabilitation
- Reducing Symptomatology (symptoms) - through pharmacotherapy (prescribed drugs), psychological treatments and psychosocial interventions
- Reducing the effects or side effects of the above such treatments eg. Prolonged institutionalisation.
- Improving Social Competence - by enhancing individuals' social skills, through psychological coping and occupational functioning.
- Reducing stigma and discrimination
- Family Support - to those families with a member who has a mental illness.
- Social Support - eg housing, employment, social network and leisure
- Consumer Empowerment - enhancing autonomy, self-sufficiency and self-advocacy.
