Hughenden, the main centre in the Shire of Flinders, is situated on the banks of Queensland's longest river, the Flinders River. The entire Shire is located above the Artesian Basin and many properties—plus the town—rely on water from sub-artesian bores.
Hughenden, 245 km west of Charters Towers, 518 kilometres east of Mt Isa, 386 kilometres south west of Townsville and 1432 kilometres north west of Brisbane. It is known as the "Dinosaur Country" and is part of the Flinders Shire. The area has a history dating back to pre-historic times. Once the Flinders Shire formed part of the Inland Sea, where Dinosaurs roamed.
Local attractions include the Dinosaur Centre and the Porcupine Gorge National Park just north of the town.
Hughenden Health Centre comprises of a small rural hospital with 15 beds, Dental Clinic, Specialist Services, Community Mental Health and Aboriginal Health. Four of the hospital beds are designated long-term nursing home beds. The hospital provides accident and emergency, acute medical and limited surgical service and limited obstetric service. The Royal Flying Doctor Service evacuates ill patients. The hospital has a Operating Theatre that is utilised by the Flying Surgeon, Visiting Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, on their monthly or two monthly visits.
Specialist Services are provided by one full-time generalist nurse, who is responsible for Child Health, School Health and Domiciliary Health.
One Aboriginal Health Worker provides Aboriginal Health. The services provided including screening and education.
