Indigenous Mental Health Service

Overview

Mental health service provision to Indigenous people is provided through mainstream mental health services. The IMHS employs a number of Indigenous Health Workers with specific training and expertise in mental health service delivery. Additionally the IMHS has a growing number of mental health professionals who identify as Indigenous. These staff support the provision of specialised mental health care to Murri patients and their families. Murris who access this service usually have serious mental health problems that require continuing treatment, support, care and rehabilitation.

The Institute of Mental Health Services has a range of strategies to support and provide culturally-appropriate services and employs an Indigenous Mental Health Professional Senior. This position is a member of the Professional Senior Group and the Executive Committee for the Townsville Institute of Mental Health Service which leads the reform of mental health models of care and clinical practice culminating in an integrated mental health service across the spectrums of Adult, Child and Youth, Forensic, Extended Care and Rehabilitation.

A mental health team works on Palm Island, Monday to Friday.

The Indigenous Mental Health Professional Senior and a Psychiatric Registrar also provide a visiting mental health service every six weeks to the remote communities of Mornington Island, Doomadgee, Burketown and less frequently to Normanton. Generally they will be accompanied by one other senior mental health services staff member.

In addition to the above, a Psychiatric Registrar provides a weekly mental health clinic at the Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service (TAIHS) in Garbutt.

Individuals have access to a range of specialised treatment and support options. Care is designed in a continuous and coordinated manner and is offered between a range of settings.
