The Mental Health Team is located at the Joyce Palmer Health Service facility (Palm Island Hospital). The team is community based and provides a Monday to Friday service comprising of assessment and treatment for Indigenous patients and their families/carers in both inpatient and outpatient areas. These include
• Individual treatment programs
• Family interventions
• Group therapy
• Short and long term support
• Programs and Support groups
• Psycho-education
• Outpatient Clinics
The Palm Island Mental Health Team consists of Nurses and Indigenous Health Workers. The service aims to support people with mental health issues in the community and maintain their independence.
The team is supported by a range of visiting mental health services including a Psychiatric Registrar one day a fortnight, Consultant Psychiatrist one day every 6 weeks, the Indigenous Mental Health Services Professional Senior, Child & Youth Indigenous Mental Health Workers for 1 day a fortnight and other specialist mental health service providers. Additional support and mental health services can also be accessed using videoconferencing facilities between Palm Island and Townsville.
