Overview

The Consumer Consultant Team is a new service within Integrated Mental Health Services, Townsville. Consumer Consultants will be commencing in their role early in 2005. The team will consist of five part-time Consumer Consultants, who will be available during working hours, Monday to Friday.

As a Consumer Consultant, they have a developed understanding of mental health services from either a patient or carer’s view point. From their own experience, knowledge and understanding and through networking with other persons who have involvement with mental health services they will be able to present the unique perspective of service delivery from a consumer’s stance. Presenting feedback and information from a consumer’s stance will provide the opportunity for service enhancement in collaboration with consumer participation.

Consumer Consultants will be available to work within various parts of Integrated Mental Health Services to talk with patients, carers and health professionals about issues relevant to service provision. As they are not a member of the clinical treatment team, and will not be able to provide clinical input into an individual’s treatment plan.

The Consumer Consultant Team office is at the Kirwan Health Campus, 138 Thuringowa Drive, Kirwan. However each of the five Consumer Consultants have a specific part of Integrated Mental Health Services to which they are linked.

Referral Procedure

Patients and consumers of mental health services along with mental health professionals can refer to the Consumer Consultants. This can occur via email, telephone or face to face contact with the relevant Consumer Consultant in the specific service area.
