Overview

Mental health service provision to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people is provided through mainstream mental health services. Currently the Townsville Institute of Mental Health Services, employs a number of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Mental Health Workers that work across the spectrums of Adult, Child and Youth, Forensic, Extended Care and Rehabilitation.

The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Mental Health Worker's primary role is to provide cultural support and guidance to clinical staff, establish and maintain networks with various community organisations and provide culutrally appropriate mental health & social and emotional wellbeing promotion and prevention programs to the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community.

The Townsville Institute of Mental Health Services continues to strive toward strengthening existing and further developing a range of strategies to support and provide culturally-appropriate services. The service employs an Indigenous Mental Health Professional Senior and a District Indigenous Mental Health Worker/Coordinator. These positions have membership on the the Professional Senior Group and the Executive Committees across  the Mental Health Service.  These two senior positions provide  strategic direction to the service on culturally appropriate mental health models of care and clinical practice culminating in an integrated mental health service.
