Cardiac Patient Education and Rehabilitation
Overview
Cardiac Patient Education and rehabilitation is a service offered to inpatients and families. The role of the service is primarily to educate those affected by a cardiac event. This occurs in an individual and group setting.
The types of people we see include but are not limited to:
- All cardiac surgical patients, prior and post surgery. These surgeries include Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts and Heart Valve replacements or repairs. Patient’s are given additional information on how to cope after discharge and ongoing lifestyle modifications that may be needed.
- Anyone who is admitted to hospital for a coronary angiogram and/or coronary angioplasty. We often see these patients in a daily preadmission clinic held Sunday to Thursday at 1pm. Patients can expect during this to have:
- an ECG performed,
- blood tests collected,
- education on the procedure and a video presentation
- a medical examination by the Cardiology Team Resident Medical
Officer.
- Those admitted post Myocardial Infarction and Acute Coronary Syndrome. We discuss planned procedures or tests, necessary lifestyle changes and what these two conditions actually are.
- Anyone admitted for insertion of a Permanent Pacemaker.
- Those who are commenced on the medication Warfarin for any particular reason. This is primarily post heart valve surgery or chronic atrial fibrillation.
We also refer patients upon discharge to the appropriate outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program in the community closest to their home. These programs are located in Cairns, Atherton, Mackay, Charters Towers, Townsville, Mt Isa, Mareeba, Innisfail, Ingham and Mossman.
