The Day Surgery Unit at The Townsville Hospital is a multi-focus unit. The unit caters for day of surgery (DOSA) and day surgery (DSU) patients, which includes adults and children from six months old. Patients requiring medical imaging procedures are also admitted and prepared in the unit.
The use of the Day Surgery Unit for extended recovery post-operatively, creates bed availability in the patient's original ward and streamlines the efficiency of pre-operative preparation and theatre delivery.
The unit also encompasses an Extended Day Surgery Unit (EDSU). Here, selected post-operative surgical patients are able to stay for one night while they recover.
The unit is open 24 hours a day, Monday to Friday and closes at 1:00pm Saturday.
Visiting hours for the EDSU is until 8:00pm.
Patients care for in the EDSU are to be picked up for discharge no later than 10:00am.

Patients are referred to the unit via specialist clinics or from Consultant surgeons’ rooms. There is no direct referral to the unit.
The unit is staffed by Registered and Enrolled nurses.
