The unit is staffed by a team of specially-qualified medical staff and is recognised by the
Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine for unlimited speciality training in intensive
care. A large percentage of the nursing staff have critical/intensive care qualifications.
The unit runs a transition to intensive care programme for novice ICU nursing staff who
then may choose to continue more formal studies through James Cook University.
The Townsville Hospital Intensive Care Unit contributes to both the National Adult and
the National Paediatric Intensive Care databases. These figures demonstrate the high
standard of care our patients receive.
