About the Townsville Health Service District

The Townsville Health Service District is part of Queensland Health’s network of care and comprises The Townsville HospitalIntegrated Mental Health Services, the Magnetic Island Health Service Centre, the Ingham Health Service and community services, the Joyce Palmer Health Service on Palm Island,  Ayr, Bowen, Collinsville, Home Hill. Charters Towers, Hughenden and Richmond areas and a range of Community Mental Health Services and Community Health Services throughout this area. The Townsville Hospital is the tertiary referral, acute care hospital for the Northern Area of Queensland Health. The Northern Area occupies about 750,000 square kilometres from Mackay on the East Coast of Queensland, west to the Northern Territory border and north to the Papua-New Guinea border.

More than 600,000 people live in the zone representing approximately 17 percent of the total Queensland population. Just over half of the zone population live in one of three coastal cities and hinterland, with the rest of the population spread over 98,.9 percent of the zone area. Consequently the average population density is 0.77 persons per square kilometre compared to 2.03 persons per square kilometre for the state as a whole.   The Townsville Health Service District has more than 160,000 residents which accounts for 26.5 percent of the total Northern Area population.  The Townsville region  has a population that is younger than the Queensland average. 63% of Townsville's population is below the age of 40, while the state total is 57%, reflecting a culturally diverse society.

Emergency departments throughout the district have recorded 54,985 presentations, 36,465 of which presented at The Townsville Hospital.

There have been 3,322 babies born; 17,795 people utilised the Dental Clinic; 43,559 occasions of service in Medical Imaging and 27,924 in Oncology.

The district has 693 available beds. The Townsville Health Service District employs approximately 3,199 staff;

District Services provided: acute medical, surgical, cardio-thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, hyperbaric medicine as well as obstetrics, high risk pregnancy, general gynaecology, oncology services including gynaecological oncology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, haematology and bone marrow transplant, palliative care, urogynaecology, level III intensive care services, rehabilitation, allied health and paediatric services.
There is a comprehensive Mental Health Service in Townsville, which includes an Acute Mental Health Unit and a Secure Mental Health Unit.
