Central Sterilising Department

The Central Sterilising Department (CSD) is situated on Level One of The Townsville Hospital directly beneath the Operating Theatre (OT). A lift connects Theatre to the CSD decontamination room where soiled items are processed.

There is a second lift that leaves the OT sterile room to CSD clean area. This lift can transport a whole trolley and a person with sterile stock to OT sterile store room.

CSD is a purposely designed building with distinct areas between clean and dirty. The work flows from the decontamination room to the packing area, loading of sterilisers, sterilising bay, cooling bay then storage and distribution.

The CSD manager and staff have a sterilising certificate. New staff are encouraged to obtain a sterilising certificate. This benefits the staff as they are compensated for this qualification.

Staff workload consists of collection, decontamination, packaging and sterilising of instruments, trays and bundles from wards, departments, OT and external services such as Joyce Palmer Hospital, Magnetic Island Clinic, Sexual Health, Royal Flying Doctors Service and Lifesavers.
