The Emergency Department at The Townsville Hospital is conveniently located at the front of the building just down from the main entry with easy vehicle access for drop off and collection of patients.

A broad case mix including a wide range of trauma, medical, surgical and paediatric presentations plus a substantial number of envenomations, tropical infectious disease and diving/hyperbaric cases.

The Emergency Department presentations are in excess of 40,000 per annum with a 25% admission rate.

The Emergency Department coordinates and staffs a busy aeromedical retrieval service that transports over 1,700 patients per annum by aeroplane and helicopter. All registrars receive training in transport medicine and undertake Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) biannually. Completion of the Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) course is encouraged. Senior registrars may be trained in winch operations with recurrency training every six months.
