Medical Ward 3 is a 32-bed ward dedicated to the management of cardiac-interventional, cardiac-medical and cardio-thoracic surgical patients. The ward currently has the capability of 16 cardiac-monitored beds and is designed to meet the needs of patients with all manner of cardiac conditions.
We recognise the need for ongoing staff development and education as this is essential for improved and quality patient care.
Medical Ward 3 receives its cardiology patients from the coronary care unit (CCU), other wards, emergency department and from outlying areas transferred by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Staff are trained in identifying and treating complex cardiac conditions as well as receiving post-procedural patients (i.e. pacemaker and angiogram patients). Cardiac-thoracic surgical patients are admitted preoperatively and return to the ward after 24 hours in the intensive care unit (ICU). We have three cardiac surgeons who operate four days per week.
The unit's staff participate in the 'Transition for Cardiac Nursing' course to enable skills to be developed and enhanced in cardiac nursing. This transition course also gives a 50 per cent credit for the Graduate Certificate in Cardiac Nursing Course at James Cook University.
