The paediatric ward is very much a generalist unit with 23 beds. We admit just under 2000 children each year. We are the resource unit for the region and therefore train nurses up in various specialties accordingly. We admit all medical including infectious diseases and oncology. We have two pressurised rooms to accommodate the latter. We also cover all specialties within surgery except cardiac. It is a complex ward but an interesting one due to the variety.
The ward serves not only the children of townsville but also those throughout the district. For these families we have access to Ronald McDonald and Red Cross House to provide extra accommodation.
