Surgical Ward 1 is a 30-bed in-patient facility providing first-class orthopaedic and ophthalmology services to clients and patients within North Queensland. The ward services an area including Ingham, Ayr, Home Hill, Charters Towers, Richmond, Hughenden, Mt Isa, Magnetic Island and Palm Island with referrals also accepted from Mackay, Cairns and Mornington Island.
Care is provided by a team of nursing, medical, allied health, administrative and hotel support staff including a nurse unit manager who is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the unit and the provision of human and material resources. The unit also has a clinical nurse consultant/educator who is responsible for the standard of care and the competency of nursing staff. The unit employs 8.14 clinical nurses, 17.94 registered nurses and 6.09 enrolled nurses. Surgical Ward 1 is a progressive, innovative unit that welcomes new ideas from all team members which will contribute to improved patient outcomes.
Orthopaedic services include elective surgery (including major joint replacement),fractured neck of femur, osteoporotic fractures, traumatic fractures, motor vehicle accidents, lacerations and tendon damage and necrotising fasciitis. The director of orthopaedic surgery is supported by one staff specialist, three visiting medical officers (VMOs), two registrars and four non-training registrars, five resident medical officers (RMOs) and a secretary. Their major areas of interest are hand, sports injury and joint surgery.
Ophthalmology services include both elective and traumatic management of complex eye conditions. The ophthalmology service is provided by three VMO's, one training registrar and one part-time RMO.
