The Townsville Birth Centre at The Townsville Hospital offers care in a home-like environment where you can give birth in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, supported by family and friends. Your care will be provided by a single, known midwife and/or a small number of known midwives. This type of maternity care is known as caseload midwifery. Each midwife has a number of women with whom they work in partnership throughout the pregnancy, labour and birth and in the early period after the baby is born. If your pregnancy is considered to have no identified risk factors, you may consider birth centre care. Should complications arise during your pregnancy, your care can be provided in collaboration with obstetricians.
At the Townsville Birth Centre you will receive one-to-one care by a known midwife throughout the pregnancy, birth and post-birth period for up to six weeks after the birth. This model of care is best described as family friendly, women-centered care with an holistic approach to pregnancy, birth and parenting. We support and empower women and our model is based on mutual respect with an emphasis on safety for mother and baby. Your midwife will assist you to make informed choices and will aim to be an active participant in your care choices.
The Townsville Birth Centre is a self-referral unit. This means you do not need a referral from your GP. The Birth Centre is also an early referral unit. We recommend you contact us as early into your pregnancy as possible as the midwives' caseloads fill quickly. Phone 4796 2779 for more information.
