
After the birth of your baby, you will be transferred to the Maternity Ward which is located on the Ground Floor and has both single and shared rooms. Click here to see location on floor plans.

Rooming-in is the policy at The Townsville Hospital Maternity Ward, so your baby will be with you for the majority of the time.
We respect your decision as to how you wish to feed your baby. Every effort will be made to assist you with the method you choose. All mothers who wish to breastfeed are encouraged and assisted to do so as soon as possible following birth. We advocate demand feeding.
Disposable nappies are put in the general refuse bins. Cloth nappies are to be placed in the bins provided which are clearly marked.
This hospital no longer supplies pads for your use. Please ensure you bring an adequate supply for your stay with is. Sanitary bins are provided in your bathroom.
This program gives you the option of going home within 0-3 days of having your baby. You will receive continued care, via daily visits from a Hospital Midwife. The Midwife will ensure you and your baby are well and offer help, support and advice. She will also weigh your baby and attend to important screening tests. Partners visiting hours 8am to 12 midday
General visiting hours 2pm to 8pm
There is a rest period between 12 midday and 2pm for all women. We encourage this rest after lunch.

Your menu will be delivered with your breakfast for collection after your meal.
Please note that smoking is not permitted anywhere on the Hospital grounds.
Televisions are attached to each bed area. Staff will provide you with information regarding hiring televisions during your stay with us
The newsagent located near the Hospital usually does a round each day. The trolley, which carries things such as papers, magazines, toiletries etc., comes daily Monday to Friday. There is also a canteen available for your visitors, located up from the front foyer of the Hospital
A photographer from First Photo visits the Hospital on each day for your convenience. With your permission, she will introduce herself and offer her services.
A selection of parenting education videos is available in the Ward. Please ask staff if you wish to view any of them and they will arrange this for you at any time.
It is suggested that you do not bring jewellery, valuables or large amounts of money to hospital. Change and telephone cards are available at the Front Office.
You are most welcome to wear day clothes around the Hospital.
Telephones are available in your room. Please see the Staff for the telephone number. Please ask the Staff about direct contact arrangements. A public telephone is also available n the front foyer of the hospital.
Whilst you are with us, a Child Health Nurse will visit you and discuss your options for follow-up care.
They will do a round on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Members of the Australian Breastfeeding Association may also see you whilst you are here and provide you with contact information.
A social worker, Physiotherapist and a Dietician are available for consultation. Please just ask if you would like to see them and staff will contact them for you.
On arrival to the ward after the birth of your baby let the staff know when you would like to go home as many things have to be planned and organised before discharge. This will ensure that your discharge day runs smoothly.
