Childbirth and Parenting Education Sessions

The childbirth and parenting education sessions provide the opportunity for you to learn about your pregnancy, birth and becoming a parent. There are a variety of sessions each designed to meet your specific needs. It is essential that you book into the sessions. This can be done through the Women's and Children's Clinic. 

Evening sessions 5 x 2 hours

Half day Saturday Childbirth education sessions 2 x 4 hours

All day Saturday Childbirth education session 1 x 6 hours

Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) Childbirth and Parenting Sessions

Young Parents' program 7 x 3 hours

Birth after Caesarean (BAC) information session 1 x 2.5 hours

Breastfeeding workshops 1 x 2 hours 

Evening Sessions 5 x 2 hours:

These are a series of five consecutive classes run over five weeks.

Pregnant women and their partner/support person are invited to attend.

Classes can be started from 24 weeks onwards.

A physiotherapist runs the first session in the Allied Health Department on the ground floor. The remaining four sessions are run by the hospital midwife.

Half Day Saturday Childbirth Education Sessions 2 x 4 hours:

These sessions can be started from 26 weeks onwards. Information and practical tips/skills are discussed and explored to help prepare the pregnant woman and her partner/support person for labour, birth and early parenting. 

When: Monthly over 2 weekends from 9am to 1pm or 1.30pm t0 5.30pm

All day Saturday Childbirth Education Session 1 x 6 hours:

These sessions can be started from 26 weeks onwards. During the day information and practical tips/skills are discussed and explored to help prepare the pregnant woman and her partner/support person for labour, birth and early parenting.   Priority for attending is given to women who find it difficult to commit to multiple sessions.  e.g. women living out of the Townsville area.   The evening and half day sessions provide more comprehensive preparation for labour, birth and parenting. Less time is available during this condensed course. It is recommended women attending compliment this session with a breastfeeding workshop (see below for more details).

Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) Childbirth and Parenting Sessions

MGP midwives run their own childbirth and parenting sessions over three consecutive weeks.

First session is a "meet and greet" followed by a childbirth and parenting education session.  Session 2 and 3 finish at 7.00pm.

Pregnant women under MGP care and their partner/support person are invited to attend.

Sessions can be started from 26 weeks onwards.

When: First three Wednesdays of the month. 
Week 1 - 5.00pm - 7.30pm
Week 2 and 3 - 5.00pm - 7.00pm
Venue: Kirwan Campus IMPS Building Thuringowa Drive Kirwan

Young Parents' Program 7 x 3 hours:

This seven week program is run by a Child Health Nurse and a Midwife from The Townsville Hospital. The program is specially designed for young women under 23 years of age and their partner/support people. The sessions are held in a relaxed, friendly setting.

The program can be started from 20 weeks onwards.

Examples of topics covered include:

Women can be referred by their Midwife or Doctor or self refer.

When: Tuesday 9.30am - 12.30pm

Six sessions are held at Kirwan Campus, Thuringowa Drive .

One session is held at The Townsville Hospital.  During this session there is a tour of the birth suite and maternity ward.

Birth after Caesarean (BAC) Information Session 1 x 2.5 hours:

This evening session is specially designed for women, and partners/support person, who are between 22 to 32 weeks pregnant and have had a previous caesarean birth.   They are run by a midwife with a specialist obstetrician providing medical advice.  

The session provides the opportunity to:

Breastfeeding Workshops 1 x 2 hours:

This session is run by a Midwife/Lactation Consultant.    The session can be attended from 24 weeks onwards.   Partners and a support person (friend, mum, sister, aunt…) are encouraged to attend.  The session is held in a friendly, relaxed environment and provides the opportunity to explore thoughts and feelings surrounding breastfeeding.
