Birth Plans

The Birth Preference plan is a list of options for the pregnant woman and her partner/support person to identify preferences for their birth experience. Especially with a first baby, a plan enables them to select options they really care about and is therefore the basis for discussion with the midwives, medical officers and the other caregivers. It is important to remember that a plan should be flexible to include the possibilities of unexpected outcomes.

A Preference List is -

It is not necessary to have a formally written plan, (such as the Hand Held Record), although you may wish to do so. However, it is a good idea for you and your partner/support person to have discussed what is important to you for the birth, as well as the possible alternatives, prior to labour.

Try to consider all aspects of labour as well as possible alternatives. This allows for greater flexibility. We encourage discussion to include unexpected events such as the need for forceps or caesarean section or a sick baby who needs to be admitted to the Special Care Nursery. This will help you be prepared for all possibilities. It also encourages important communication and discussion about worries and fears.

There are many possibilities for labour and birth. You are encouraged to gain as much information as possible. This will allow you to make informed choices regarding your care.

Read books, attend classes, have discussions with midwives, friends and watch videos. It is important to remember however, that just as all pregnancies are different, so too are all labours. The midwives and doctors are happy to answer your questions, so please discuss these issues with us.
