Early-Assessment Medical Unit (EMU)

What is the Early-Assessment Medical Unit

The Early-Assessment Medical Unit (EMU) is a designated ward situated near the Emergency Department at The Prince Charles Hospital. The 10-bed unit (in 2009 this will increase to 16 beds) was designed with the comfort and high quality clinical care of patients as its top priority.

In the unit, our specialist staff assess, plan and initiate the care and treatment of patients with general medical conditions who will undergo initial clinical tests and treatment.  As a result of our assessment, patients may either be discharged home or admitted to a specialist medical/rehabilitation or sub-acute care unit.

The EMU is able to facilitate a patient's transition from inpatient to ambulatory care services such as Hospital in the Home program.  Inherent in this is the requirement to establish effective communication strategies with ongoing care providers whether they be hospital based (eg outpatient clinics) or community based (eg general practitioners).
